As those of you who were at Costume College (CoCo) probably know, donations for Cathy Hay and Demi Harman’s “Hope To Haiti” charity site ended midnight, July 31st.

And therein lays the rub.

You see, no one said which midnight the fundraising was to end on (EST? MST? PST? Maybe at midnight in Haiti?). As a result, Random Acts has decided to extend the deadline for fundraising for one more week.

NEW OFFICAL POSTED CLOSING TIME: The Hope to Haiti Project will close on Sunday, August 7, 2011, at 23:59 EST US (11:59 PM EST US).

If you spoke to Cathy at CoCo, you’ll know there has been a bit of jostling for first place. At the time that the donations closed, she and Demi had won with a lead of something like $300 on the next team member. That lead was secured by the donations of a lot of wonderful folks in CoCo classes, at the tea and even people just stopping by to place donations under Cathy’s door.

But as soon as the site reopened for donations, the woman she had handily passed immediately donated another $800+; so that she is now $571 ahead of Cathy and Demi again.

But you know that can’t last – right? Because we’re not going to let it!

If you can, please

PLACE YOUR MONEY IN THE BUCKET

Best of all, if you are just getting to hear about this all for the first time – you can still get on the filter for the blog postings for the Peacock Dress project: Free with your donation.

Aside from the lovely feeling of helping a fellow costumer trounce the competition, you also get to know that you contributed to a project that is securing shelter, food and educations to the community of Jacmel, Haiti. Having just experienced how wonderful a community coming together can be (have I mentioned to you all, Costume College ROCKED MY WORLD!), let’s give some of that love to others.

Let’s look at this week as an opportunity to make an even bigger difference.

hsifeng: (Hi-5)

I am not a ‘kid person’. I think kids are great, but my husband and I don’t want any of our own (aside from the furry ones), and I am often lost when it comes to how to deal with children when I encounter them (other than acting like one of them myself, which usually leads to me getting hard looks from their mother after I ramp their little darlings up on sugar and then encourage them to run around like wild beasties).

However, I do love and respect parents. Parenting has got to be the hardest job on this planet. I understand it is also infinitely rewarding, but those rewards all come with a high price in time, effort and emotional energy.

Even more so when your child has special needs.

I am pretty sure everyone on my F-list is either related to or knows someone with Autism. I have a number of friends whose children are autistic (from mild to severe). One of those friends is [livejournal.com profile] femkederoas , who often talks about the challenges of living with not one, but two beautiful little girls, both of whom have been diagnosed as being ‘on the Autism Spectrum’.

She is an amazing, patient and very HUMAN mother to her children. Not perfect (who is) but working hard to give her girls every advantage as they learn to exist in a world that isn’t really adapted to their needs.

[livejournal.com profile] femkederoas and her mother are going to be taking the girls to participate in the Walk Now! Event on September 10th. She has set up a Team Page where you can go to donate. The page has a current goal of raising $500 toward increasing awareness of autism disorders, funding research and advocacy for those with autism and their families.

I am making this post to let you all in on this opportunity; I am also making it as a commitment to donate myself once payday rolls around. I think we can blow that $500 goal out of the water.

If you cannot donate, I totally understand; if possible, I  would ask that you help boost the bandwidth on this opportunity by posting information about this effort to your own LJ or FB pages. Thank you for any help you can offer

Love you [livejournal.com profile] femkederoas , happy to support you and your girls in any way I can!

So Cathy and Demi are going to Haiti this week. They are going to be helping folks like the ones in the video below by working on the construction of a community center in Jacmel. This is a huge undertaking; I am incredibly proud of them for the efforts put in to both travel to Haiti (cost and a HUGE list of injections at their own expense) and to ensure that they raised a contribution to the project that is more than any other donor.

If you watch the attached video, I want you to notice something. The Haitians presented here are living in complete devastation, and they are smiling. They are playing. They are laughing.

These people have all lost something; most of them have lost things that are more important than any material possession. They have lost family and friends. They have lost loved ones.

If grace exists anywhere in this world, this is an example of it. They aren’t perfect human beings, but they are our fellow human beings.

If you can give, PLEASE DO.

And if you are a costume lover, be sure to note your contact information along with your contribution so that you can join in on the Peacock Dress filter and enjoy the vicarious thrill of watching a Worth dress be recreated and come to life!

Thank you for reading!

I guarantee you got nothing on [livejournal.com profile] harmanhay .

First of all, she is the creator of Your Wardrobe Unlock’d and Foundations Reveled.**

What? Never heard of them? You sew? Historical garb? Fascinating….

OK then, have you seen the Oak Leaf Dress? Three months of handsewing five hours a day. Just to get the leaves done.

The. Leaves.

*gob-smacked*

If you were at Costume College in 2009 you may have seen it in person.

Original:

And honey…that was the warm up.

So what is this deranged woman up to now?

Just a little something ya’ll like to call the Peacock Dress.

For realsies.

What’s more? She’s doing it FOR CHARITY.

Those ‘feathers’? Hand beaded. All over. The whole dress.

And she is going to make a copy. In exacting detail. And let us all follow along.

*faints dead away*

Wanna see her go insane? Go forth and throw your sweaty dollar bills in her basket! That way you get to watch as the madness unfolds (the dress diary on this one is going to be set to private – so if you no donate, you no get to see).
