So…some folks on the SRS list started chatting up a Road March/Trail Hike idea as another ‘alternate method for exploring our history’.

I have been considering this sort of thing for a long time now: I have two packbaskets, the ability to make a pretty nifty ‘slung rig’ for porting even more equipment if necessary (and if I can manage it with a partner) and the basics for a camp kitchen. The things I still need are as follows:

Large leather costrels (a friend is working these out for me currently)

Bedroll(s)Maybe, I think I can manage these with the materials I have on hand

Basic canvas lean-to Maybe, if the hubby doesn’t talk me into sleeping under the stars

Better period footware – What I have isn’t really that period, and frankly figuring out just how much hiking in period shoes sucks would be part of the point of this thing…

Period fishing kit – already in the works!

I think I have a good location: But it is a trail hike, not a road march. Not good for people who are out of shape (6 miles, about ½ of it uphill in either direction). There are family cabins available for staging, I think horses would be OK since the local pack station uses that same trail, but black powder would probably be right out…

Interesting…

Arguments in favor of the lean-to

A sheet of canvas and some rope would always be handy not just for a sleeping lean-to, but to shield a cook fire (and cook) from wind or rain or to serve as a ground cloth/bedroll. While on the march, it could become a bundle and be useful rather than taking up extra weight.

Agreed! I have even seen some clever chaps make their lean-to into their pack for travel (it's a matter of how you fold it and tie it together - using the normal straps for keeping your lean-to upright of course). They even incorporated their wooden upright poles into the rig to make the pack more firm. Then again, I think a clever person could find the right branches laying about near camp to make those same poles out of rather than hiking them in...

How big of a costrel are you looking for? I know you have it covered, but it's always good to have a back up.

That is a good size and basic shape, but the one I am getting is a lot less expensive and should be a little more decorated that that version. Still, always good to have back up - thank you!

Lady Anthonette, the Middle Kingdom Minister of Youth did an A&S Pentathalon entry on period fishing - she has some awesome resources and info. Her info is on http://www.midrealm.org/mkyouth/. She one in our Kingdom, and did ok at Pennsic.
