Book Love

Can I tell you something? I love the digital age! At what other time in history (up until now that is - barring time travel) could I have gotten a chance to peruse this little gem today? [profile] dravon, when you start making horse barding again you need to start with these:

.

It is always nice to remember that our ancestors liked playing dress-up too! *grin*

Great picture, but is there any chance you can put it behind a cut? My friends list is hard to read! Thanks :)

Thanks!

And what a fun book--I've been looking through it :)

Looking through it I was struck by the potential parallel between this sort of figural parade and the sort one sees several times a day at an amusement park like Disneyland: Both have ‘popular cultural heroes’, lots of pageantry, and tons of bright colors.

The images also evoke some powerful suggestions about the way that these people saw themselves: Connected to their own history (http://daten.digitale-sammlungen.de/~db/bsb00001352/images/index.html?seite=142), educated (http://daten.digitale-sammlungen.de/~db/bsb00001352/images/index.html?seite=89) and part of a larger world (wherein there are apparently only four main continents: America (http://daten.digitale-sammlungen.de/~db/bsb00001352/images/index.html?seite=101) , Africa (http://daten.digitale-sammlungen.de/~db/bsb00001352/images/index.html?seite=113) , Asia (http://daten.digitale-sammlungen.de/~db/bsb00001352/images/index.html?seite=126) , and Europe (http://daten.digitale-sammlungen.de/~db/bsb00001352/images/index.html?seite=139)).

EDIT: Sorry, had to fix some links there! ;)

You might want to check out the book on the Nuremburg Schambart festival (Mardi Gras) and see the costumes and parade of earlier in the century. T'is coolness.

Thank you for the recommendation!

Let me be an ass, get it out of my system: Isn't that an allegorical picture? *snorts*

I do love it. Expecially the foo-man-chu skull/crossbones one! That's awesome! I need to get some garb made for M, so that I can start playing horsie dress up guilt-free. hehe. Thanks for the inspiration. :)

Not to worry, I expected it! *grin* Yeah, the skull-n-crossbones are da’bomb. I have to admit, I like the gambling one more though…

FYI - I think the ‘foo-man-chu’ skull is actually a skull with a snake in its mouth….
