Baby Ring Sling Project

The source for my sling instructions is above.
As you can see from the included photos this sling is reversible and has a shorter section of brocade than it does the striped fabric (because that was all of the brocade that was left on the discontinued fabric rack!). This is why there is an interior seam on the ‘inside’ of the sling.

Before being passed thru the rings, the fabric is pleated and the pleats are sewn in as described in the website instructions. I had hoped to get something ‘fancier’ looking on the pleats since the stripes offered some possibilities, but I am OK with how this turned out even though it wasn’t exactly what I first had in mind. The pleating stabilizes the ‘center’ of the sling when you put the rings on.

Once the fabric passes thru the rings, I slipped the rings around a chair leg and then laid the fabric out on the floor, good sides together. The chair leg with the rings around it acted as a stable platform to manipulate the fabric from. I cut the brocade narrower than the striped fabric, and then matched up the edges in this step and sewed them in place. When I turned the fabric thru the open bottom edge of the sling I had a bit of the striped fabric as ‘trim’ to the brocade interior. Of course, the brocade shows on the ‘tail; of the sling as well as on the inside.

The rings were purchased at http://www.slingrings.com/. They actually made an error on my original order, but were quick to correct it. They actually sent me extras the second time around!
The recipient (my friend Sarah) came over while I was working on the project so she has already seen it ‘half way done’. She loved it! *happy dance* I can’t wait to give it to her at the baby shower this weekend.
Next time I want to do one with a pocket and some other features. These are fun, one day (or less) projects that I think most moderate sewers can do and the results are one-of-a-kind!
I am thinking of using the left over fabric for a steampunk corset and mini-bolero jacket…or something…*grin*
UPDATE: The sling was so well received that I have been commissioned for a few more by various other new mommies and preggers ladies at the shower. *chuckle* Hey, it's free fabric and a chance to try out some other sewing ideas like the pocket, a bottle holder, etc on the tail of the sling....
