There was much fingerloop braid making this weekend. I have officially corrupted a couple of 'old school' West Coast frau into making Steuchleins based on my crazy "layers" theories (BTW - [livejournal.com profile] sstormwatch, we need to get together and take some photos soon!).

The fingerlooping on the ties for the Wulsts lead into fingerlooping some "lace bend" samples for the powderhorn hangers (thank you Gina!):

My Lace Bend Samples

Sample on the left is a four loop in wool yarn, on the right is an eight loop in cotton embroidery floss. I think the wool yarn is closer to the original in 'texture' and in size in relation to the flask (although I am begining to suspect that my flask is larger than the museum example I am using). The problem with the wool cording is that it is *too* large to fit well through the "leash loops" on the flask. For this reason, I may well end up using the embroidery cord instead.

The good news is, these aren't that hard to make (I think the emblishments on the ends will be more time consuming that then braids themselves). I have figured out how to double the braidable length by working a long cord from both sides of a mid-point per the instructions here

*yippeee!*
