Edmund Burke, 18th C. British statesman: "When bad men combine, the good must associate; else they will fall one by one, an unpitied sacrifice in a contemptible struggle."

 

This statement has been modified in the common parlance to state, “All that is required for evil to prevail is for good men to do nothing.”
