Where Do We Go From Here...

Just got done reading [livejournal.com profile] dravon's entry here.

While I wish I could say that I have a deep seated belief that we will all rise above the current milieu and restart our country on a fresh course of democracy and civil liberty, I have a sneaking suspicion that we will follow the ‘historical course’ of such events and devolve into an Empire: One with far less personal freedom and political determinism that we currently enjoy.

What the future holds is anybody's guess. I can't imagine this country getting worse, but I can't deny the possibility. I probably can't imagine it, because I have nothing like what may be coming to refer to. Our grandparents might.

What I'd rather do than worry that our country will get sucked down the tubes because Palin ends up our leader and becomes a puppet of Rove and Cheney, is hope that the country awakens from it's stupidity, turn away from fear, and make something closer to what our ancestors envisioned our country could be.

My slice of the 'Believing in the Intelligence Of My Fellow Americans' pie is pretty thin right now: I think most citizens (and I use that term loosely) will settle for an X-Box in their Christmas stocking from whatever administration is in the White House. I wish I wasn't so pessimistic about this, but I have a deep seated belief that any self aware nation would have fixed this problem a long time ago. We are a self indulgent nation; therefore we let it all slide so long as we metaphorically “get whatever consumer goodie is 'hot' in the electronics section of our local newspaper”.
